Something is stalking the residents of Shadow Grove, changing them into brain-dead caricatures of themselves. It’s up to Rachel to find a way to stop the devouring of her hometown before all is destroyed and everyone she loves is forever lost.
Review: This was a fun YA fantasy mystery reminiscent of Beautiful Creatures and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. This definitely had a satisfying creepy factor. It was a bit of a pet peeve I had that Mrs. Crenshaw supposedly knew exactly what to do stop the issue that had such dire consequences but instead wants Dougal and Rachel to figure it out for themselves - it resulted in a lot of frustration. I think a few details could have been left about Rachel’s biases etc but ultimately they do provide her with a growth arch. This binds captivating aspects of faerie lore, other types of magic, horticulture and horrific figures all in one story. The end left a perfect opening for book two, which I have already downloaded courtesy of #kindleunlimited!
