Book Review: The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl by Melanie Chisholm

The Spice Girls didn’t just influence Pop music in the 90s, they changed what it meant to be a Pop music band. Originally called Touch, the band was formed to fill the void of female musical groups in a male group dominated world. Melanie C or Mel C writes about being shot into super stardom seemingly overnight brought amazing, unique opportunities into their lives but did so at a price. Many of the girls suffered from paranoia due to phone tapping, experienced difficulty with the other members due to managers giving each girl different standards and information, and suffered from various eating disorders due to the pressure from the media to always look perfect. Despite the Spice Girls never having broken up, Melanie C is one of many of the girls to have gone on to pursue a solo career l, becoming the only female performer to top the charts as a solo artist, as part of a duo, quartet and quintet.

I remember when I was in second grade we had a day when we could dress up as what we wanted to be when we grow up - without hesitation I knew I wanted to dress up as a Spice Girl. I was a tad bit embarrassed when I got to school and there were doctors and lawyers but now I look back and I am so effing proud of that girl who rocked pigtails, space buns, and peace signs unapologetically and without fear.

I am so impressed by her compassion, humility, and kind spirit. She talked about exes, scandals, people talking ill of her, and more and always managed to say it in a non-aggressive way. She emphasized the growth and the lessons learned from every downfall. The graceful way she’s matured is incredibly admirable and it’s made me love her all the more.

I want to talk about what made this a 5.5 star memoir, because despite loving a good celebrity memoir occasionally I never enjoy them this much or come away thinking “I have to tell every single friend to read this” the way I did with this one. This is exactly what I want in a memoir: behind the scenes fun tales without any bashing or badmouthing, cautionary advice without judgement, and brutal honesty without self-importance or excuses. She only held back regarding legal issues and talked a perfect amount of time on every matter, leaving you feeling satisfied but not bored.

I’m so glad I read this in audiobook form. I felt like she and I were sitting down for tea and she was telling me, period by period, how her life unfolded. I truly cannot over emphasize how much I enjoyed this book and have come to respect Melanie. I recommend this to every single Spice Girls fan (girl power!) but also anyone who reads memoirs and biographies.
