Book Review: The Wife Upstairs by Freida McFadden

Sylvia is down on her luck when she is approached by Adam with a job offer. He’s just seen her save a woman’s life and thinks she would be the perfect aide to his disabled wife, Victoria, during the day. Days away from eviction, Sylvia views this job as a saving grace she can’t refuse and moves into their Montauk home. That’s when things get weird. Sylvia finds Victoria’s diary begins to doubt everything she has come to know about the couple and their marriage. Will Sylvia put her faith in the wrong person?

I wanted so badly to really love this book and maybe my expectations were too high. I hate to say it but the ending of this book was very predictable to me. I had the bulk of it figured out from about a third of the way in and though I desperately hoped for an unpredictable twist, I found none. There were so many parallels to Verity that I found it distracting. I will say if you can suspend with what you know about Verity’s plot or haven’t read it, this could be a solid thriller for you. The writing was solid and I want to dive into another one of McFadden’s books.

TW: gaslighting, abuse, violence
