Book Review: Things I Should Have Said by Jamie Lynn Spears

Zoey 101 star. Mom of two. Country music artist. Younger sister of the princess of pop. Actress. She’s worn a lot of hats and titles over the years but Jamie Lynn Spears is pretty universally a household name. After years of choosing not to speak publicly, she is sitting down to tell her truth.

I want to start this section by saying I am a lifelong Britney fan. While I was deeply saddened by her mental and emotional struggles and the aftermath in 2007-2008, I could have never dreamed of the hellish nightmare she was pushed into as a result. This is what happens when you work someone too hard, push them too far and give them zero healthy outlets and treatment and then just do damage control instead. I’ve also been a fan of Jamie Lynn from her days on Zoey 101 and want nothing but the best from her. I went into this book giving her the benefit of the doubt.

This was actually painful to listen to. It was not well written or well thought out. It jumped around a lot timeline wise and was kind of hard to follow as a result. It read a lot like “here are some things the media said that hurt me so I want to set the record straight” as well as a complaint fest. Her strong defense of Nickelodeon as a network as well as her mom’s seemingly toxic behavior is troubling. Somehow even when attempting to be introspective, she deflects all blame for negativity and flaws to her childhood and onto others. I would have loved more heartfelt actual stories from her childhood instead of her reciting what a great and talented kid she was. I would have loved insight into her relationship with Britney instead of rehearsed lines. This had the potential to be so good but came across as so staged and political.

⭐️⭐️💫 - 2.5/5
