Book Review: Well That Was Unexpected by Jesse Q. Sutanto

George is launching his first app and his family sets him up on a dating app to find a nice girl. When Sharlot’s mom walks in on her and her boyfriend getting hot and heavy, she decides to take her back to Indonesia and set her up on a dating app so she can meet a wholesome boy. The two are thrown together and do have a mutual attraction to one another but find it hard fully connecting to one another without restraint because they’re not the ones who have been connecting on the app. Will they be honest with each other and connect for real or let a relationship with real potential fall by the wayside?

Me: I’m going to read a fun YA romance novel. Jesse Q. Sutanto: *mwahaha*

This was so much more than it appeared on the surface. Both Sharlot and George are complex characters that represent modern day issues we face. I love that Sharlot moves past her initial discomfort and cattiness with her cousin and ends up having a genuine connection. Also it was refreshing to see an Shar’s mom and George’s eighth aunt following their heart and making themselves happy. Their relationship brought on a very serious conversation that society needs to have - because we maybe heterosexual doesn’t mean we should assume all others are and push our views onto others. I also really like that George and Shar’s feelings develop organically and not forced or in a cheesy way; their relationship was so cute! I highly recommend for anyone looking for an out of the box romance!
